The wet course and humidity slowed the varsity Comets a little, but not enough to prevent them from a third place finish in the Culver Military Academy sectional meet. Mitchell Rans won the race in 16:47, with Micah Colvin finishing 7th in 17:58. Bryan Hernandez-Rios showed some fatigue from back to back sectional soccer matches earlier in the week, but still placed 12th in 18:20. Rounding out the scoring five were Dakota Oldfather (25th, 19:26) and Luke Lowe (42nd, 20:36). Luke was also pretty worn down from sectional play on Monday and Tuesday. Seniors Mark Smith and Brock Buczkowski finalized the Caston runners finishing in 21:56 and 22:05, respectively.
We came from a super fast course in nearly perfect conditions last week to a deceptively difficult course in wet, humid conditions this week. Three of my runners are also soccer players and they had a tough week with two soccer matches, and in spite of that they came out here and gave everything they had left in the tank to secure a third place finish. Micah told me after the race that he saw Bryan fading in the third mile and thought to himself ‘I’ll have to pick up some places to make this up.’ All of my runners have shown that kind of heart all season long, and it’s now paying dividends. The guys will rest up for the remainder of the weekend, we’ll have a shakeout run Monday, and we’ll plan our week around training to get out of Regionals.
